Salmonella infection is a common bacterial disease that affects the intestinal tract. Humans become infected most frequently through contaminated water or food. USDA's Agricultural Research Service Food and Feed Saftey Research Unit in Texas has also tried feeding low doses of sodium chlorite to pigs and cows before slaughter and found it to selectively kills Salmonella and E.coli.
